After having an operation that meant I could only breathe through my mouth, my lips started to swell to twice their size..and not in a sexy way. They cracked and blistered and flaked and bled until I came to my senses and had a look through my lip supplies.
Luckily a few months before my stunt in hospital, I'd had an obsession with finding some good natural lip products after reading the ingredients on what I was using and realising that most of the bad things in them were probably ending up in my stomach. After my operation, I felt like I wanted to start anew and use products that wouldn't put my body under any unnecessary stress, now or in the long run. So lip products without petroleum jelly or colouring were a happy find in my beauty drawers. I have three in particular that I've been loving for different reasons.
The La Bamba Rosa Healing Rose Balm feels luscious on the lips and smells like roses (duhhh) so it was always going to be a favourite. The only thing I don't like about it is that it comes in a pot so I'm always dipping my fingers into it and whether I like it or not, dust does get into it (note: pictured above is the sample I have, but the actual product still comes in a pot). Despite this, I use it a lot and it is the perfect lip product for me. Just enough moisture, a great feel on the lips and a lovely scent.
The Lanolips 101 Lip Ointment is made from pure lanolin oil so it feels quite oily on the lips and is best used before going to bed or working a tiny amount of it into the lips before putting another product on. It doesn't taste great but I didn't purchase the product to taste amazing or look amazing, I wanted a fuss free product that repaired my lips and that's exactly what this does. They do have other options in their range that are coloured with lovely flavours that have a similar level of moisture for those who want something more.
The Crabtree and Evelyn Creme de Menthe Lip Butter is the most 'unnatural' of the lot but that doesn't mean it's as bad as most mainstream products. Its texture is similar to other lip glosses and lip butters and its applicator tip makes it so easy to apply. This product is almost a combination of a lip gloss and a lip butter so if it is applied in a fit of excitement, it can make your lips look pale and unhappy so even though it smells amazing, calm down and put on a reasonable amount. This is what I reach for when I want my lip product to apply easily, taste lovely, feel lovely and nourish my lips. Now, who doesn't want that?
So, definitely take a look at some natural lip products! If you're anything like me, you're using them everyday so it's worthwhile to make sure they're good for you.
